"Sleepless" is a portrayal of Penelope from Homer's Odyssey. Unusually for a character in ancient Greek literature, Penelope is never described in terms of her physical appearance. Instead, we know her for her loyalty and for her cunning, with which she hoodwinks 108 men for three years by weaving every day, and undoing her day's work every night.

This painting portrays Penelope in the gloom of night, with her unravelling web behind her.
